Adventures in Couponing.

Hello and welcome to another Sunday sharing of my coupon adventures.  I get quite a few comments and e-mails with people asking about Walmart doubling coupons.  From what I understand, this is a local market decision.  We have a very competitive market with Albertsons and Kmart doing double coupons a couple of times a month.  We also have Fred Meyer (Kroger) in our market as well as Winco.  So a lot of grocery options.  Walmart here honors pretty much anything that anyone else is doing when they are doing it.  I have heard scuttlebutt that Walmart is going to do double coupons nationwide so I would encourage you to keep calling your local store manager and sharing your interest there.

So here we go with doubling coupons at the Walmart….  Weight Watchers yogurts were 35-cents each after coupons & doublers.  I do yogurt for breakfast during the week to the tune of about $1 each, so this was a really good price for me.  However – truth in advertising: these were horrible.   They taste diet.  They have that diet sugar taste that you get in diet soda.  Awful.  Won’t be buying these again – even if they are free.  And Stouffer’s Chinese dinner packs were $1.88 each after coupons & doublers.  $3.76 to feed the 4 of us Chinese food for dinner, I can dig it.

Libby’s can veggies were 25-cents after coupons & doublers.  The cheapest that good/name-brand canned veggies will go to is about 33 to 50-cents a can, so 25-cents for me is a stock-up price.  The Green Giant veggies were 18-cents after coupons & doublers so again, stock up.  I had one random $1 Herbal Essences coupon from the P&G packet that I get in the mail every month so I got the trial size one for free as it was only 97-cents (made 3-cents actually).  And the gummy bears were 37-cents after coupons & doublers.

Holiday chips!  I’m not sure which was which, but I had (2) $1 coupons that I doubled and got one of these free and the other for $1.  I’m guessing it was the tortilla chips that were free.   Using these for my daughter’s Christmas party we are hosting – love hosting on the cheap.  Wasa crackers were $1.98, doubled $1 and got these free (made 4-cents total).  And the Hormel snack tray was $5.48 and I had a $3-off coupon which made it $2.48.  Broke it apart and snuck it in to the Boise State game for our snacks – shhhh! 😉

More 38-cent tea (doubled $1 on each), and the rest of the drinks here were $2.98, doubled $1 and they were 98-cents each.

Idahoan mashed potatoes were 98-cents and I had $1-off coupons that I didn’t have to double and still made 2-cents each there.  The Minute brown rice was 61-cents after coupons & doublers.  And I wrote the fine folks at Maruchan because I never see coupons for their stuff and they sent me a couple of coupons that I doubled and got the noodle cups for 16-cents each and the ramen packs for 6-cents each.  Ramen totally reminds me of college:  Domino’s pizza and ramen, those were the days!

These little Tai Pei meals were $1.97, doubled 75-cents and they were 47-cents each.  Great price for my husband’s work lunches.  And the Smucker’s Uncrustables were $2.58, doubled $1 and they were 58-cents each.

If I remember right, stuffing typically goes on sale for 99-cents at holiday time.  I was able to get them for 85-cents each after coupons & doublers.  Some things are never going to be free or 10-cents, so I do what I can to save.  The Vanity Fair napkins were 87-cents after coupons & doublers.

Jolly Time popcorn was 48-cents each after coupons and doublers, more 37-cent gummy bears, and the Christmas m&ms were totally free after doubling $1-off-any-2 Mars products.

As I was tooling around the Walmart I spotted these coupons on the product.

$2.78, doubled the $1 that was on the box and these were 78-cents a box.  My stock-up price for cereal was about 50-cents a box, but I haven’t seen that in about a year now, so I have taken that up to $1.

And here’s just a little shot of how I check out.  I put my coupons and my doublers together with the items they go with.  And I do like items with like items – you’ll fare better with your checker if you make things easy for them:  less mistakes, and they are nicer to you 🙂

The best things at Albertsons this particular week were the Smuckers jams and the Bear Creek soups:  $1 each after coupons, doublers and Catalina cash back.  Head & Shoulders is another item that is not ever going to be cheap so I do the best I can.  My husband uses this stuff and it’s expensive.  I haven’t been watching for it and got in to a position where he needed it and we had none so the best I could do was $3.99 each and that’s after coupons & doublers.  Definitely something I need to be more alert to at Walgreens as I’m sure I could get this on a 2-for-$5 sorta sale.

Speaking of Walgreens.  This week’s moneymakers were, uh, kinda embarrassing?  This “itch cream” was $4.99 get $4.99 back.  I found a coupon online that took $2 off so I ended up making $2 on this.  The “hot flash” pills LOL! were $9.99 get $9.99 back and I found a coupon for $3 off so I made $3 on this.   Need to find the right person to give these things to in their Christmas stockings – ha ha.  And then the Snickers nutcrackers.  Again I used that same $1-off-any-2 Mars products and got 26 of these for free – score!

I sent my husband back to Walgreens on the last night of the sale.  Let’s just say he wasn’t thrilled when I gave him the shopping list.  He was however thrilled that they were out of that cream!  So more free Snickers nutcrackers.   Another box of $3 moneymaking Estroven.  The Welch’s Christmas drinks were $1.50 each after coupons which was half off the sale price so good enough and we needed them for the Christmas party.  The cranberry sauce was 99-cents; probably could have gotten cheaper elsewhere, but he was there and we needed fillers, so what the heck, might as well get something we need.

seriously amazing michelle! i am so ‘coupon inspired’ by you!! i did hang up my couponing hat for a while, i was getting VERY frustrated with our local Publix grocery store, and just didn’t feel like driving all over town to find deals. I also deleted the coupon blog (too much work, trying to simplify life, not add to it!)….. but, i am ready to get back on track 😉 Happy to hear that maybe the Walmart doublers will go national, that would be nice! It sounds like you are in a great market for grocery deals, and then of course you are an amazing couponer to boot, so hooray for your success!!!!
